For summer 2011, Germany's second largest airline is increasing the number of flights running to and from Saarbrucken. From May, there will be an additional connection from Saarbrucken to Berlin on Mondays to Fridays and Sundays. The new flight not only opens up new connections to the Scandinavian cities Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Gothenburg, it also permits quicker connecting flights through Berlin-Tegel. For Sundays, the new destination on the schedule will be the Italian city of Bari.From Monday to Friday, the departure time from Saarbrucken will be 10:50, arriving in Berlin at 12:00. The flights from Berlin will depart at 17:10, landing in Saarbrucken at 18:30. On Sundays, the flight will depart from Saarbrucken at 17:10, to land in Berlin at 18:20. Volito Aviation Services (?Volito Aviation?), on behalf of VGS Aircraft Holding (Ireland) Limited (?VGS?), and airberlin have signed a sale-and-leaseback contract for two new Airbus A320-200 and one new Airbus A321-211. VGS acquired the two Airbus A320-200 through its wholly owned subsidiary, Olbia Limited. Both aircraft have been leased to airberlin since December 2010 and will continue to be leased to the airline until June 2012. In 2010, a total of 33,593,010 passengers traveled on airberlin's flight route network (including the acquired NIKI routes), i.e. an increase of 3.8 percent over the previous year (2009: 32,375,531 passengers, including those traveling on the acquired NIKI routes). airberlin was thus able to increase the number of passengers, as the company had forecast in the spring, despite the unexpected external influences that marked 2010. For instance, in December 2010 alone, approximately 800 flights were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Fleet capacity utilization for 2010 decreased from 77.5 to 76.8 percent, i.e. by 0.7 percentage points, whereas accumulated capacity increased by 4.7 percent. In December 2010, airberlin welcomed 2,285,974 passengers on board, i.e. an increase of 3.3 percent (December 2009: 2,212,118 passengers, including those traveling on the acquired NIKI routes). airberlin is increasing the number of flights it operates between Berlin and Saint Petersburg for the new year, thereby expanding its services to Russia. From the start of the summer timetable Germany?s second largest airline will now be offering 13 flights a week instead of the previous seven flights to the major city on the Neva River. These new services allow airberlin to offer new connections via the hub in the German capital. The flights are now integrated into the key departure times in the mornings and evenings so that passengers from Russia have better transfer connections to German and European airports than those currently available. Connecting flights will be available for instance to Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante and Palma de Mallorca. There will also be connecting flights to Rome, Naples, Basel and Salzburg.
