Transaero Airlines

Transaero Airlines was registered on September 30, 1990. The first flight under its own airline code, UN, took off from Moscow for Tel Aviv on November 5, 1991. In 1992, the airline purchased its first own aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-86. Transaero launched regular service on domestic and international routes in 1993. We created a true breakthrough product that had major impact on the development of air transport in Russia and the CIS. Transaero was the first in Russia to add modern foreign-made aircraft to its fleet and provide an international standard of service on its domestic routes by introducing Business Class, creating a flexible system of fares and discounts, and introducing frequent-flyer incentive programs.

In 1993, Transaero was the first in Russia to start operating Boeing airliners. The route network and traffic were growing rapidly. In 1995, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) named Transaero the world’s fastest-growing airline.

In the wake of the Russian financial crisis and default of 1998, Transaero, whose core fleet at that time consisted of foreign-built leased aircraft, adopted a five-year recovery program. It helped the airline remain in business and acquire the potential for a new positive development cycle. In 2001, Transaero moved its home base to Domodedovo Airport, and began expanding its route network and adding new aircraft to its fleet. We led the industry in terms of steady growth from 2003 to 2008. Our passenger traffic over the period increased 12 times. In 2007 and 2008, Transaero was the leader in the Russian airline industry in terms of absolute increase in passenger traffic. In 2005, Transaero became the only operator of Boeing 747 airliners in Russia, the CIS and Eastern Europe. We chose Saint Petersburg as our new place of registration in 2006. The airline began to expand its network of flights from the northern capital of Russia.

We continuously improved the quality of the product we provided to our customers. In 2007, Transaero became the first Russian airline to launch e-ticketing and online check-in. In 2008, we launched our Imperial Class with a unique standard of comfort. Transaero introduced a three-cabin layout on its Boeing 737 and Boeing 767 aircraft: Business Class, Premium Economy Class and Tourist Economy Class. Our Boeing 777 long-range airliners are Russia’s only four-cabin passenger aircraft.
