Domodedovo International Airport Holds Workshop for Mass Media on Combating Aviation Terrorism
Domodedovo International Airport held “Mass Media and Combating Terrorism in Aviation Industry” workshop. Issues related to transport security were discussed at the workshop. Its objective was to provide additional information on the matter to journalists covering emergencies and terrorist combating activities.
The workshop was jointly organized by Domodedovo International Airport and Press Development Institute NGO within the framework of Future without Terrorism, Terrorism without a Future project.
Viktor Kulikov, Director General of Global Foundation for Combating Crime and Terrorism, and Olga Karabanova, Director of Press Development Institute, took part in the workshop. Emma Scherbanenko and Eduard Malkov, representatives of Global Foundation for Combating Crime and Terrorism, made reports on the Foundation activities related to development and promotion of amendments to a number of laws regulating mass media covering emergencies and antiterrorist activities.
Reports made by the workshop participants were related to the main issue: coverage of emergencies and especially terrorism by mass media.
Mass media representatives discussed a number of key aspects of the work of journalists covering these issues. For instance, they expressed their views regarding professional and ethical issues of terrorist activities’ coverage, co-operation of mass media with law enforcement agencies and anti-crisis task forces.
Domodedovo International Airport representative informed the audience on innovative solutions implemented in the airport to improve safety and security as well as on how airport services are to operate in case of an emergency. Apart from that special attention was paid to use of advanced knowledge and technologies developed by aviation industry security services and law enforcement agencies of Israel and the USA.
Experience gained in the recent years shows that there are certain important issues which are to be taken into account in case of an emergency. Their list includes prompt announcements, handling, rapid deployment, hot line opening, publication of appropriate information at the corporate Web site taking into consideration requirements of the commission in charge of investigation.
The workshop, active participation and interest expressed by Russian press covering social and political issues confirm the willingness of professional journalist community to discuss problems and develop common standards for emergencies’ coverage.
