Today, August 11th, 2014, Sheremetyevo International Airport celebrates its 55th anniversary. OnВ this day inВ 1959, Sheremetyevo Airport provided services toВ its first passenger flight from Tu-104 from Leningrad.
For more than half aВ century, Sheremetyevo Airport has been satisfying strategic objectives inВ the development ofВ the transport industry and has been the main air gate ofВ the country.
Today, Sheremetyevo Airport isВ the largest Russian airport, handling scheduled international flights, and with anВ annual passenger traffic ofВ about 30В million passengers. ByВ surface area, Sheremetyevo Airport isВ the largest airport complex inВ the country, and itВ comprises six passenger terminals.
Sheremetyevo Airport has been recognized asВ the top European airport, offering the best passenger-service quality according toВ results from ACI (Airports Council International) Airport Service Quality research program. This isВ anВ outstanding achievement inВ domestic civil aviation.
JSCВ MASH employs 6,700В people, and today, during the ceremony, the most honored employees received departmental and corporate rewards.
At the ceremonial meeting, Mikhail Vasilenko, the CEO of Sheremetyevo International Airport, congratulated the airport team on the anniversary, and read out a greeting from Maksim Sokolov, the RF Minister of Transport. M.M. Vasilenko presented gold and silver award pins, and certificates of appreciation and acknowledgment to the airport’s best employees. “Sheremetyevo International Airport’s history is inextricably connected with history of aviation industry in our country. In these 55 years, our airport came a long way, and today it is justly recognized as the top European airport. This success should be credited to many generations of specialists in various professional fields who are united by the love of what they do, and by a high responsibility and sense of pride in the enterprise they work for. We strive for innovations and continuous development, and today the airport stands on the cusp of some new, great transformations, including the reconstruction of the northern wing and the construction of a third runway. In future, these global infrastructure projects will give us the opportunity to completely satisfy the needs of airlines and passengers,” said M.M. Vasilenko.
OnВ this anniversary, Sheremetyevo Airport isВ holding aВ number ofВ festive events for its employees, passengers, and guests.
Today, Sheremetyevo Airport is meeting the latest wide-body Airbus A350 XWB arriving from Doha as part of world tour. Airbus A350 XWB will undergo a whole series of ground technical and commercial services at the airport. On August 12th, a presentation and a guided tour inside the plane are going to be held with Airbus’ management and representatives of the country’s aviation authorities and enterprises among participants.
Throughout the day, congratulations on the anniversary will be heard form loudspeakers all throughout the Sheremetyevo Airport terminals. In cooperation with ITAR-TASS, the Information Telegraph Agency of Russia, the airport opened an exhibition of photographs titled “Sheremetyevo turns 55. Fly’s well!” This exhibition shows flashbacks from and modern photographs of the air harbor. Within, rare photos from opening ceremonies of the first regular flights, the construction of terminals, and greetings from famous politicians, musicians, and public figures can be seen. The photographs were taken by such famous photo-reporters of ITAR-TASS as Vladimir Yatsina, Valentin Mastiukov, Viktor Koshevoy, and Oleg Ivanov, to name only a few. The exhibition is open in the public area of Terminal Е.
Sheremetyevo Airport received a number of congratulations for its 55th anniversary. Telegrams of greetings were sent by Alexander Neradko, the Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Alexander Zhukov, Head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Valentina Kabanova, RF State Duma Deputy and Chairman of the Moscow region trade unions, Anatoly Bunarev, Chairman of the Russian Trade Union of Aviation Workers, and M.V. Zherebtsov, General Director of Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Administration of Civil Airports (airdromes)” and others.

Background:
Construction of Sheremetyevo Airport started in 1953. It was built as the chief aerodrome for the Soviet Army’s air force. Later on, by a resolution of the government and with personal assistance of N.S. Khrushchev, the airport was transferred to the Main Directorate of the Civil Air Fleet.
OnВ August 11th, 1959В a Tu-104 liner took off inВ Leningrad and landed atВ Sheremetyevsky Aerodrome, where the airport divisions rendered aВ full range ofВ commercial and technical services for the first time. This date isВ considered the birth date ofВ the airport.
In 1964 Sheremetyevo-1 Terminal (Terminal B) was built, including boarding building, which got the nickname of “Shot glass” and became a highlight of the airport for years to come. On January 1, 1980 on the eve of the 20th Olympic Games in Moscow, the new Sheremetyevo-2 international air terminal (Terminal F) was inaugurated.
InВ 2007, Terminal CВ for international flights with annual capacity ofВ 5В million people opened its doors. InВ spring 2008, aВ modern Aeroexpress railway station was built and direct Moscow-Sheremetyevo railway service was provided.
InВ December 2008, aВ premium-class hangar complex offered its comprehensive services for business-aviation jets.
InВ autumn 2009, Terminal DВ was commissioned (with area ofВ 172 thousand m2, designed for 12В million passengers per year). This airport terminal isВ intended for servicing flights ofВ Aeroflot and its partners from Sky Team alliance.
InВ spring 2010, Sheremetyevo Airport established aВ modern international Terminal EВ with total area ofВ 76В thousand m2 and annual capacity ofВ more than 7В million passengers. This terminal connected terminalsВ D andВ F and Aeroexpress railway station with each other and created one entire South Terminal Complex.
InВ 2011, inВ the northern part ofВ Sheremetyevo Airport, the construction ofВ Terminal AВ was completed. This terminal was intended toВ render services toВ business-aviation passengers.
InВ 2013, aВ new Sheremetyevo Airport Flight Control Tower began operating, complying with all modern requirements toВ aircraft service quality.
Sheremetyevo International Airport isВ the first Russian airport which established anВ integrated plan ofВ prospective development upВ toВ year ofВ 2030, taking into account parameters ofВ the RFВ Transport Strategy upВ toВ 2030. The master plan involves increase ofВ Sheremetyevo Airport capacity upВ toВ 64В million people and transit traffic growth byВ 25% byВ year ofВ 2030.
