Ekaterinburg Airport Presents its Development Projects at INNOPROM 2011

The construction of a modern Cargo Village, the setup of a new airport holding, and the regional air service development program — those were the three projects presented by Koltsovo Airport at INNOPROM 2011, International Ural Exhibition and Forum of Industry and Innovations, which was held in Ekaterinburg on 14–17 July. Furthermore, the interactive display, the focal point of the largest regional airport’s booth, ran movies familiarizing the visitors with the infrastructure development master plan of Ekaterinburg Airport and enabling them to compare Koltsovo’s performance with that of other Russian airports.

“Our airport is changing with every year: the infrastructure keeps developing, new airlines are coming, the service quality improves and the range of services expands. It is essential for us to inform the general public and the authorities of our key development projects, and the visual presentation of them in such a large exhibition is an excellent opportunity,” commented Alexei Piskunov, First Deputy General Director of Ekaterinburg Koltsovo Airport. “The visitors are especially interested today in the construction of a new Cargo Village fitted with state-of-the-art equipment. That will enable us to improve the quality of services for cargo carriers, to acquire new airlines and, consequently, to increase the cargo traffic through the airport. That will be beneficial for the expansion in trade relations of Ekaterinburg and the Ural region with various cities and countries worldwide.”

The construction of the new Koltsovo Cargo Village designed by Hochtief Airports, Germany, began in June 2011. About 17 000 square metres will be put into operation by the end of this year, accommodating the cargo terminal, offices of the airport’s Cargo Division, Koltsovo Customs and the Checkpoint Ekaterinburg-Airport. Another 22 000 square metres of buildings and structures will be constructed in 2018–22. The total investment will amount to about 1.7 billion rubles. Preliminary forecasts say that the implementation of the Village by 2030 will enable Ekaterinburg Airport to handle up to 79 400 tonnes of cargo, more than triple the year 2010 figure.

Another project presented at INNOPROM 2011 was the setup of a new airport holding governed by Koltsovo professionals. Its first step was the acquisition of Nizhny Novgorod Airport and its phased development according to a ten-year program. Now the airport’s main operational indicators are far inferior to those of the largest Russian airports; however, the potential of both the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and its airport, combined with Koltsovo professionals’ expertise, suggest feasibility of a substantial air traffic growth. The total investment in Nizhny Novgorod Airport will amount to about 2.7 billion rubles.

The regional air service development project had been presented by Ekaterinburg Airport at the first Innoprom in the summer of 2010. Since then, the airport and its partner airlines have launched several new regional services from Ekaterinburg, and there are more to come. To support the project, Koltsovo Airport is planning to acquire four turboprop airplanes and place them in RusLine Airline’s management. That will be an important contribution to the implementation of the regional air service development program. However, it is becoming obvious that Koltsovo’s own resources are insufficient and either matching contributions by other airports or external funding is needed.
