Joachim Hunold, CEO airberlin, and Father Caesar Atuire, Priest and Chief Executive Officer of the Catholic pilgrimage organisation Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi (ORP) as well as Karlheinz Kіgel, Chief Executive Officer of Binoli, signed a joint venture contract at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in Berlin. airberlin and Binoli thus become official partners of ORP for the German-speaking world with immediate effect. Father Caesar Atuire came to the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in Berlin especially to sign the contract. Part of the agreement is to offer special rates to passengers who travel to Italy with airberlin to attend the central festivities of the Catholic Church. On 8 March 2011, airberlin took delivery of the first ever Boeing B737-700 with the new Sky Interior cabin design. The first B737-800 with this comfortable interior had already been delivered on 15 February 2011, making airberlin the only airline offering the new cabin design for both the Boeing 737-700 and Boeing 737-800. In February 2011, airberlin transported a total of 2,132,057 passengers, i.e. an increase of 1.0 percent. Due to the comprehensive cancellations of flights to Egypt and Tunisia, the number of passengers transported developed less favorably than in January 2011. The political unrest in Egypt and Tunisia caused several hundreds of February flights to be cancelled, reducing the number of passengers transported by a six-digit figure. From May, there will be an additional connection from Saarbrucken to Berlin on Mondays to Fridays and Sundays. In 2010, a total of 33,593,010 passengers traveled on airberlin's flight route network (including the acquired NIKI routes), i.e. an increase of 3.8 percent over the previous year (2009: 32,375,531 passengers, including those traveling on the acquired NIKI routes). airberlin was thus able to increase the number of passengers, as the company had forecast in the spring, despite the unexpected external influences that marked 2010.
